Berkey® water filters start to operate once water is poured into the upper chamber of the stainless steel system. Gravity then starts drawing water through the black Berkey® top rate exclusive purification elements where bacteria and contaminants are captures and stored within these micro porous elements and are separate from your clean, fresh, and nutritious water.
The more filters your Berkey® water system has, the faster your unit will produce clean, fresh, and nutrient rich water and the faster it will recover from peak or sustained water usage. The bigger systems are taller thus they generate more water pressure, also increasing the flow rate of the water.
A great tool for choosing the system of your choice will be to check the flow rate of the system and multiply that by the exact holding capacity of the filter, the number is a good indicator of maximum number of people that each stainless steel system would support under normal working condition.
All units produce the same quality of fresh, clean, and nutritious water. In determine which Berkey® water filter to purchase keep in mind that the smaller systems are more portable and the bigger systems produce more water.
- Knowing the size of each Berkey® water filtration system and choosing the perfect one for your needs: – The average person should consume ½ gallon of water per day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. More water should be consumed during hot weather situations or if you are a very active person. Please note that customers also use their Berkey® filtered water for other uses such as cooking, so the need of water will be increased for many individuals.

The best advice for choosing the appropriate size of Berkey® water filters depends on the needs and choices of each individuals. Its more convenient to choose a bigger system due to the fact that you wouldn’t have to fill it up to often. If you have the space for it the bigger models would be of better choice. The higher volume in the stainless steel upper chambers increases so the pressure upon the filters, the water will flow much faster if compared to other smaller systems.
All models of the Berkey® water filters come configured with 2 upper chamber filters, the black Berkey® filter elements. The quality of filtration will not be improved by increasing the number of filters used in the upper chamber. The flow rate will increase if more filters are added in the upper chamber of the stainless steel system. For example, if you increased the number of black Berkey® elements in your filter from 2 to 4 the volume and speed will be almost doubles. From 22,700 total liters to 45,000 total liters. You want to absolutely make sure that the holding capacity of the filter system of your choice is big enough for your water consumption needs.
