Need Help Choosing Your Berkey Water System Filter?

1. How It Works

Each Berkey® system consists of an upper and lower chamber. Water is poured into the top chamber, where gravity pushes it into the filters. The purified water collects in the lower chamber, where it can be dispensed through a spigot.

2. Choose Your System

Berkey® offers six different sized stainless steel systems and one Berkey® Light system constructed of non-BPA copolyester. When choosing a system, please consider the following: how many people (and pets) will be drinking the water, how much space you have in the kitchen or area where it will be used, and whether the system will be used for sustained or emergency use. Please keep in mind that the larger the system, the less often it will need to be filled.

3. Choose Your Primary Filters

We carry two types of filters; the Black Berkey™ Purification elements and the white Super Sterasyl ceramic filters. All of the Berkey® systems come standard with two Black Berkey™ purification elements or two white Super Sterasyl filters. The Black Berkey™ elements or ceramic filters are placed in the top chamber of the Berkey system. If you add additional elements or filters to your system, this will increase the flow rate of the water from the top to the bottom chamber. Please note that the purification quality of the water does not change by adding additional elements/filters, but it will increase the speed and volume of water that can be purified. Flow rates are calculated with the upper chamber full to the top. The flow rate decreases as water level declines. As it is impractical to keep the upper chamber completely full at all times, the flow rates are in practice less than the stated optimal rate.

4. Choose Your Post Filters

If you want to reduce fluoride in your water, you will need to use post filters that work in conjunction with the filters in your system. We have two types, the PF-2™, which are used in conjunction with the Black Berkey™ purification elements, and the PF-4™ filters that are used in conjunction with our ceramic filters.

The Black Berkey® Purification Elements Filters also have a long lasting life. Two elements in a Berkey system will purify approximately 6,000 gallons of water before a replacement is recommended. You can clean it again and again when needed and it sterilizes itself during the life of the element. The Black Berkey® Purification Elements Filters come with a 2-year pro-rated warranty.

With this new technology that Berkey has topped, it won’t be a problem anymore on how to purify water that is very safe for use and for drinking purposes. Many customers have tried other products but they failed to remove the contaminants in water. Records of the laboratory testing, only Berkey exceeds the normal limitation given to a particular water filter. Berkey has set the standard for all water filters to surpass. Black Berkey® Purification Elements Filters have become the leader in a gravity-fed water purification.

What are the Berkey (PF-2 & PF-4) Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Element Filters?

The Berkey (PF-2 & PF-4) Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Element Filters are designed to be used in conjunction with the Black Berkey® Purification Elements Filters. They are used to absorb contaminants found in drinking water. Contaminants include heavy metals ions, Fluoride, Arsenic V, and pre oxidized Arsenic III.

  • The PF2 elements must also be primed just like the Black Berkey components.
  • Berkey PF2 elements can lessen the filtration stream rate by 14 to 20%.
  • Read the manual carefully for correct setup instructions. The PF2 elements are seated in the bottom part of the tank and it is ready to use. Rest assure that the filter had discarded the first full tank to get rid of any remaining manufacturing dust.
  • Do not put the matter to freezing temperatures, high temperature or simmer the fluoride water filter components.
  • The PF-2 elements are stress-free to set up and after setting up the Black Berkey components, simply attach the PF-2 elements on the thread trunks of the Black Berkey Purification Elements leaving the wingnuts in place of the Black Berkey Purification Elements.
  • When lower reservoir is full of water, the Berkey PF-2 Elements will be immersed
  • If you conduct the “Red Food Color Test” for the Black Berkey Purification Elements, you must remove the Berkey PF-2 Elements first. Failure to do so may result in the voiding of the Berkey PF-2 Element’s warranty.
  • When water level in lower reservoir rises above the bottom of the Berkey PF-2 Elements, it is normal for small amounts of water to burp through threads connecting Berkey PF-2 elements to Black Berkey Purification Elements.
  • Do not boil this element.
  • The lower reservoir in most gravity purification systems has a 2-3 -gallon capacity and a typical household uses about one refill per day. We recommend that the upper reservoir be filled at night. The water from upper reservoir should be purified by morning. It is normal for the purification process to slow down significantly when water level in lower reservoir rises above the bottom of the Berkey PF-2 Elements. Households requiring more water can speed up the flow rate by drawing off the purified water into a water pitcher or other container when water level in lower reservoir rises above the bottom of the Berkey PF-2 Elements.
  • For maximum removal efficiency, maintain the water being treated between a PH level above 5 and below 7.
  • Actual capacity is dependent on the level of contamination of arsenic, fluoride and other competing heavy metal ions. Unusually high levels of these contaminants may reduce the capacity and efficiency of these elements.
  • If you’re concerned about Fluoride and seeking to remove Fluoride from the water, select the lower chamber , if you currently have the Black Berkey® Purification Elements Filters in the upper chamber.
  • If you have the Berkey Earth® DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filtration Element (Ceramic Filter) 7 & 9” or older White Ceramic filters in the upper chamber, select the lower chamber PF-4 Filters

Steps On Priming the PF-4 water filter:

1. With the blue caps still in place, wash the exterior of each PF-4 water filter with warm water and mild dish soap.
2. Remove both blue caps from each end of the PF-4 water filter, make sure your hands are clean.
3. Place the rubber priming button (light brownish color) onto one end of the PF-4 water filter and align the hole in the button with the hole in the PF-4 water filter.
4. Press the priming button up against a sink faucet so that the priming button creates a fixation seal between the faucet and the PF-4 filter.
5. While holding the priming button against the faucet, turn on the cold water gently and allow the water to fill the cavity of the PF-4 water filter and discharge from the opposite end. Allow the water to discharge for at least 28 seconds or until the water runs clear, whichever is longer. Place your thumb on top of the faucet to apply pressure creating a tighter seal.
6. Now repeat the process by turning the PF-4 water filter over and priming the filter from the opposite end in the same manner.
7. Prime each additional PF-4 filter repeating steps 3-6.

Please note that all PF-4 filters must be primed before initial use. (Videos Below)

More Information:

Fluoride:

Fluoride, is an inorganic, monatomic anion of fluorine with the chemical formula F− . Fluoride is the simplest anion of fluorine.
Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30 ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gpm (11 lpm) per cubic foot of media.
Results of < 1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, effluent concentrations of less than 50 ppb were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction).

Arsenic:

Arsenic is a chemical element with symbol As and atomic number 33. Arsenic occurs in many minerals, usually in combination with sulfur and metals, but also as a pure elemental crystal. Arsenic is a metalloid.
This product uniquely targets the entire family of arsenic oxide anions as well as the arsenic cations.

Replacing the filter:

Under normal conditions it is recommended that each set of two Berkey PF-2 Elements be replaced after 1,000 gallons (3,785 liters). The Royal Berkey system is about 3.25 gallons (12.3 liters) therefore the Berkey PF-2 Elements should be replaced after 1,000/3.25 (3,785/12.3) or 307 refills. If the system is refilled about one time per day, the Berkey PF-2 Elements should be replaced after 10 months; if the system is refilled about twice per day, the Berkey PF-2 Elements should be replaced about every five months).
Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of fluoride, arsenic and heavy metals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.

Why do you need a Water Filter?

The water that comes directly from the faucet, the tap water, may already be damaging your health without you noticing it. Water is very important as it sustains life, you can survive without food for about 30 days, but can survive without water for only 1-3 days’ maximum.
Although the water is tested, and the Environmental Protection Agency stated that more than ninety percent of the water supply in the United States is actually safe to drink, they are not entirely free from impurities like chlorine, metals, ions, chemical, fluoride, and pesticides amongst the many.
The water that is flowing from the tap is not actually something that you would think as entirely clean. Before it reached the faucet in your home, it has already travelled through miles and miles of pipeline and it has picked lots of contaminants along the way. This is why you need to consider using a water filtration system to help you improve the water quality and for health purposes.

They Remove Lead

Lead is a chemical element with symbol Pb and atomic number 82. It is a heavy metal with a density exceeding that of most common materials; it is soft, malleable, and melts at a relatively low temperature.
Lead can enter drinking water when service pipes that contain lead corrode, especially where the water has high acidity or low mineral content that corrodes pipes and fixtures. The most common problem is with brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and fixtures with lead solder, from which significant amounts of lead can enter into the water, especially hot water.
Homes built before 1986 are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures and solder. The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) has reduced the maximum allowable lead content — that is, content that is considered “lead-free” — to be a weighted average of 0.25 percent calculated across the wetted surfaces of pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, and fixtures and 0.2 percent for solder and flux.

Lead can be removed from the water when you let the water pass through a filter that uses a reverse osmosis mechanism, a carbon filter or distillation that was specifically designed to remove the metal out of your drinking water. It is very important that lead is removed from the water that you drink because it could be toxic when ingested. Lead could commonly get into your drinking water by seeping into your water supply when it passes through the old plumbing pipelines or the solder that is used for them to join together.
If your major source of water is a well, health authorities recommend that you will need to have the water tested for at least once a year for any lead of other kinds of contaminants.

They Remove Chlorine

Chlorine is a chemical element with symbol Cl and atomic number 17. The second-lightest of the halogens, it appears between fluorine and bromine in the periodic table and its properties are mostly intermediate between them.
Chlorine readily combines with chemicals dissolved in water, microorganisms, small animals, plant material, tastes, odors, and colors. These components “use up” chlorine and comprise the chlorine demand of the treatment system. It is important to add sufficient chlorine to the water to meet the chlorine demand and provide residual disinfection.

The chlorine that does not combine with other components in the water is free (residual) chlorine, and the breakpoint is the point at which free chlorine is available for continuous disinfection. An ideal system supplies free chlorine at a concentration of 0.3-0.5 mg/l. Simple test kits, most commonly the DPD colorimetric test kit (so called because diethyl phenylene diamine produces the color reaction), are available for testing breakpoint and chlorine residual in private systems. The kit must test free chlorine, not total chlorine.
Most of the water utility companies choose to use chlorine as a medium of cleaning tap water because it’s easy to use, an inexpensive choice and it is actually very effective in killing off bacteria that is found in the water. Chlorine can also be very effective in eliminating viruses in the water.
Although chlorine is actually a good and an effective disinfectant, it can make your drinking water smell and taste not good, your water could be very unpleasant. The chlorine could also react with other metals that can be found in the water, therefore, forming a hazardous compound.
Many cities all over the world make use of chlorine to clean their water supply, although this process is actually very important to make sure that we have a clean drinking water that is free from microorganisms that could badly affect our health, chlorine is basically bleach and it also carries a lot of health risks with it, it even puts you at a higher risk of developing rectal and bladder cancer amongst the many complications.

They Remove Pathogens

In biology, a pathogen in the oldest and broadest sense is anything that can produce disease; the term came into use in the 1880s. Typically the term is used to describe an infectious agent such as a virus, bacterium, protozoa, prion, a fungus, or other micro-organism.
Because all of the pathogens that can come through public water supplies, often in small amounts that can grow into large colonies when in the right conditions, all water must be effectively treated in order to remove them. In addition to treating the water itself, managers of water supplies must also keep their infrastructure clean and free of biofilms, groupings of microorganisms that have adhered to one another and/or a surface. These biofilms grow on any surface that water touches and harbor any and all microbes that that become part of the community. Biofilms, as a microbial community, work together to protect themselves from disinfection, so any presence of biofilm presents a danger.
There are several substrates including pathways where the pathogens can invade a host. The principal pathways have different episodic time frames, but soil contamination has the longest or most persistent potential for harboring a pathogen. Diseases caused by organisms in humans are known as pathogenic diseases.
You need to keep parasites and bacteria out of your drinking water because they could be a grave threat to you and your family’s health.
Cryptosporidium, and what even made this parasite dangerous is because it is resistant to chlorine, so it really needs to be filtered out using a mechanical filter. A lot of pathogens could be omitted from your water by passing it through an ultra, a micro or a nano filter.
Giardia intestinalis is a microscopic parasite, this organism can survive and thrive in an environment for a long time, it could take up to several months. This parasite causes Giardiasis which is a kind of an illness which causes diarrhea that could last for six weeks. The microscopic parasite that causes that kind of illness, along with other of its kinds, can be ingested from the water that was contaminated with human or animal feces.

They Remove Fluoride

Fluoride, is an inorganic, monatomic anion of fluorine with the chemical formula F− . Fluoride is the simplest anion of fluorine.
Fluorides are chemical compounds that help prevent tooth decay. They are found in nature – in rocks and soil, in fresh water and in ocean water. They are also found in some types of food.
Decades of research have shown that adding fluoride to water (fluoridation) helps prevent tooth decay. In some communities, natural levels of fluoride in the water supply match the optimal level to prevent tooth decay. In many others, the level of fluoride is too low and has to be added to the water supply. In Canada, the optimal range for fluoride in drinking water suggested by Health Canada is 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L)
Fluoride is added to most toothpastes, soil fertilizers and even water systems that had caused an alarm worldwide. Anything in excess is not beneficial. This act makes users prone to over consumption of the mineral that can cause serious health damage.
We only need a small amount of the mineral fluoride.  Excessive amount of it can be toxic to our health. Irrefutable evidence shows that high fluoride consumption is directly associated to gastrointestinal problems, low fertility, thyroid and endocrine related ailments and even cancer.

“It is life, I think, to watch the water. A man can learn so many things.”
